Turkey looking for name for baby gorilla it seized at Istanbul airport after it was found hidden in the Cargo of a Plane from Nigeria

The Turkish Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry announced that a name is being sought for the baby gorilla that was found in a cargo box at Istanbul Airport in December 2024. 

The baby gorilla was discovered hidden in the cargo hold of a plane arriving from Nigeria on December 22, 2024 at Istanbul Airport and captured by Customs Protection teams at Istanbul Airport under the Ministry of Trade.  

The gorilla, an endangered species is said to have been taken from its natural habitat and fell into the hands of smugglers.

The ministry in an announcement on its X social media account on Monday January 6 regarding the baby gorilla, stated, "We are looking for a name for the much-loved baby gorilla. Share your suggestions using the hashtag #BenceÄ°smi (IThinkItsName)."

The post also included a new photo of the baby gorilla.

It was noted that the baby gorilla is being rehabilitated and cared for by staff from the General Directorate of Nature Conservation and National Parks, that its health condition is improving, and that it will continue to be kept under observation.
