Man working at exchange office in Lefkoşa embezzled over 600,000 Turkish Lira: Deleted over 5,000 transaction records
An individual working at a currency exchange office operating in Lefkoşa, is a alleged to have tampered with the records of transactions involving the currency he exchanged, stealing 618,000 TL due to exchange rate differences.
The suspect named only as AK allegedly tampered with the records of currency exchange transactions while working at a currency exchange office in Lefkoşa and embezzled 150,855 TL from exchange rate differences.
It was noted that since January 2024, the suspect deleted 5,768 transactions.
He was arrested and brought to court on Sunday January 5, 2025.
Police stated that the suspect, who worked as an employee at a currency exchange office in Lefkoşa, embezzled money from exchange rate differences between August 1, 2024, and November 2024.
The police explained that a warrant was issued against the suspect following a complaint, and the suspect surrendered to the police.
The officer noted that the suspect admitted to deleting 5,035 transactions between January and November 2024 and stealing exchange rate differences during this period.
The officer informed the court that they determined the suspect embezzled 618,041 TL from the exchange rate differences in 2,411 of the deleted transactions. Investigations into 2,624 other transactions are still ongoing.
The police also revealed that before his arrest, the suspect entered two different casinos 46 times and that an investigation is underway to determine how much money he spent. Additionally, it was found that the suspect purchased two high-priced mobile phones and lent money to a friend.
The police stated that the suspect would undergo a medical evaluation at the Barış Mental Health Hospital and added that the investigation into the system is ongoing and that the stolen money has not been recovered.
The police requested a four-day detention order for the suspect.
The court granted the request.
