Man sentenced to 2 months in prison for residing in north Cyprus without permit for 58 days

An individual who was found living in north Cyprus without a permit for more than 50 days was sent to prison by a court in Lefkosa for a period of two months.

The verdict against the individual, AR, a Bangladeshi national who was arrested for residing without a permit in the TRNC and tried at the Lefkcosia District Court was announced on Friday December 27.

The presiding judge stated that the defendant was apprehended on October 18, 2024, by patrol teams in the Alayköy Industrial Area. 

The judge explained that during a routine check while the defendant was walking, it was determined that his work permit had been canceled on August 20, 2024. 

The police reported that the defendant had been living illegally in the country for 58 days, from the cancellation of his permit until his arrest.

The judge further noted that the investigation revealed the defendant had entered the country on a 30-day preliminary permit and failed to take any legal action despite the cancellation of his work permit.

The judge emphasized that the offense of residing without a permit in the TRNC carries a penalty of up to 6 months in prison and sentenced the defendant to 2 months in prison.
