Man held due to suspicious behavior arrested for living in north Cyprus without a resident permit

An individual who was found to have been living in north Cyprus without a resident permit for almost five months was brought to court and detained for 3 days.

The suspect, UBJ, 23, a Pakistan national was arrested on December 26 after it was determined that he had been living in the country illegally.

The suspect was brought to court on Friday.

The police officer who presented the facts during the court session, stated that on December 26, 2024, in the Marmara area of Lefkosia, the suspect’s suspicious behavior led the Lefkcosia Police Department Criminal Investigation Unit to conduct an immigration check on him.

It was determined that the suspect had been residing in the TRNC without authorization from the competent authorities for a total of 148 days since July 31, 2024.

The officer noted that the suspect was caught in the act and taken into custody, and an investigation was initiated. He stated that further statements needed to be obtained.

Pınardan added that correspondence would be made with the Ministry of Interior and that it needed to be investigated whether the suspect had committed any crimes during this period.

The police requested that the suspect be detained for three days to ensure the investigation could proceed smoothly, as there was a possibility that the suspect could influence the statements to be collected.
