Libyan Football Federation fined $50,000 by CAF over AFCON qualifier
The penalty follows a goalless draw between Benin and Libya in Benghazi, which secured Benin’s spot at the continental tournament. The match’s outcome incited anger among Libyan fans, who threw stones and bottles at the visiting team.
Benin head coach Gernot Rohr revealed that players and officials suffered assaults from fans and police after the final whistle.
In a statement, the CAF Disciplinary Board found the LFF guilty of breaching Articles 82 and 151 of the CAF Disciplinary Code due to the actions of its supporters and officials during and after the match. As a result, Libya is required to play its next two official home matches behind closed doors in addition to the fine.
This incident marks the second significant sanction for the LFF in recent months. Earlier, the federation was fined $50,000 following a disrupted game against the Nigerian Super Eagles, where the Nigerian team was stranded at Al-Abraq International Airport for over 20 hours, leading to the game’s abandonment.
