Hit and run driver surrenders to police more than one week after the incident in Lefkosa

A hit and run driver who hit a pedestrian in the Walled City of Lefkosa and fled the scene surrendered himself to the police almost two weeks after the incident.

The incident happened on December 29, 2024 on İdadi Street in the Walled City area of Lefkosa when the suspect HM, 23, an Iranian hit a pedestrian and fled the scene.

HM surrendered to the police on Tuesday January 7 and was brought to court on charges of "reckless driving and failing to report the accident to the police within 24 hours".

Police stated that on December 29, 2024, they received information about a vehicle hitting a pedestrian on İdadi Street in the Walled City area of Lefkosia and proceeded to the scene.

The police emphasized that when they arrived at the scene, they saw that the injured person, identified as Abdurrahman Demir, was being transported to the ambulance.

The police explained that no information about the vehicle that struck the pedestrian could be obtained during the initial examination at the scene. They visited Abdurrahman Demir, who had been transferred to Dr. Burhan Nalbantoğlu State Hospital, but he said he could not remember anything.

The police reported that security cameras in the area were reviewed and identified a gray vehicle that had quickly entered the Walled City area.

On January 2, 2025, the police determined that the vehicle in question was a Nissan with license plate BP 920.

The police further stated that on the same day, the driver of the vehicle, the suspect, was identified and contacted by phone, but they could not reach him.

As a result, the police contacted the suspect's friends by phone and informed them that he was being sought. The suspect surrendered on January 7, 2025, along with his lawyer.

The police noted that the part of the investigation where the suspect could have an influence had been completed. They also stated that the suspect was residing in the country as a student and requested appropriate bail conditions.

Police prosecutor requested bail for the suspect.

The suspect’s lawyer claimed that their client had previously attempted to surrender.

Evaluating the testimony in court, the judge ordered that the suspect be released pending trial under the following conditions: a ban on leaving the country, reporting to the nearest police station twice a week, depositing 45,000 TL in cash as bail, and providing a guarantor who is a reputable TRNC citizen to sign a bail bond worth 300,000 TL.
