Greek Cypriot police officer arrested for obtaining Indian delivery driver

A Greek Cypriot police officer who works for the special unit police officer was arrested in south Cyprus on Wednesday allegedly extorting money from an Indian delivery driver.

The officer was charged to court on Wednesday January 8 for corruption, abuse of power, and bribery.

He is aid to have extorted money from an Indian delivery driver on two separate occasions.

The officer first stopped the driver and demanded cash, receiving €400, according to the complaint filed with police. A week later, the same officer allegedly stopped the driver again, taking €40.

Initially dismissed, the complaint gained traction after CCTV footage corroborated the delivery driver’s account. The police’s Internal Affairs Unit arrested the special officer on charges including corruption, abuse of power, and bribery of a public official.

Authorities will decide whether to detain the officer pending court proceedings or release him.
