Student arrested for being drunk allegedly broke the windows of the Lefkosa police department

A woman who allegedly broke the windows of the Lefkosa police branch where she was taken to after her arrest for causing a public disturbance while under the influence of alcohol has been released on bail.

The woman named only as BME, 27, a Nigerian student in north Cyprus was arrested on Sunday afternoon during her visit to the Lefkoşa Police Directorate Criminal Department for causing public disturbance while under the influence of alcohol and causing damage to properties of the Lefkoşa Police Directorate Criminal Department.

She was brought to the court on Monday December 23 on charges of  "willful damage, drunkenness, disturbance, and inappropriate behavior".

Police officer who testified in court said at around 12:45 PM on December 22, 2024, the suspect who resides in Lefkoşa, was at the Lefkoşa Police Directorate Criminal Department on allegations of taking someone else’s passport. 

When asked about the whereabouts of the passport, the suspect, who was found to be under the influence of alcohol at 139% promil, began shouting loudly, causing a disturbance. 

She also displayed inappropriate behavior by randomly waving her hands and then hit and broke a west-facing window measuring 60x130 cm inside the department, causing deliberate damage valued at 700 TL.

The officer reported that the suspect was arrested on the spot using reasonable force.

The officer also noted that the suspect was taken to the emergency department on the same day for first aid treatment but signed a document refusing to be examined. 

Stating that the investigation was complete, the officer added that the suspect was in the country on a student visa and requested suitable bail conditions.

After evaluating the testimony, the judge ordered the suspect to pay a cash bail of 20,000 TL, imposed a travel ban, and required her to report to the police once every two weeks.
