Man caught with drugs said he is an addict
An individual who was found with drugs during a search on his vehicle in Demirhan, admitted that he was an addict and had sought for treatment.
The suspect HG, a Turkish national was arrested at around 10:00 PM on Sunday December 22, 2024 after drugs were found in his vehicle during a search carried out by the police patrol team in Demirhan, Lefkosa, north Cyprus.
He was brought to court on Monday on charges of "Illegal Possession of Narcotic Substances".
Police said upon inspecting the vehicle, the driver, identified as the suspect, was asked to present a driver’s license and vehicle documents. The officer revealed that the suspect was driving without insurance, a road worthiness certificate, a vehicle inspection, and with an expired driver’s license. The vehicle was subsequently taken to the Demirhan Police Station for further investigation.
During a search conducted in the presence of the suspect, a piece of purple paper believed to contain narcotic substances was found next to the right front seat. Additionally, two similar pieces were discovered on the left front passenger seat, and one piece inside a black zippered bag with the brand "Seventeen" on the left rear seat.
The officer stated that the suspect was arrested and an investigation was initiated. The purple papers suspected of containing narcotics would be sent to the State Chemistry Laboratory for analysis, and further statements would be taken. He requested a three-day detention period for the suspect.
The suspect, addressing the court, admitted to being an addict and expressed a desire for treatment but claimed he was not admitted to Barış Psychiatric Hospital.
After considering the testimony, the judge ordered the suspect to remain in custody for three days.
