Ghana's former president Mahama wins election after ruling party concedes defeat

Bawumia concedes defeat after Mahama's win in Ghana election

In a significant act of statesmanship, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, the presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has conceded defeat in the 2024 general election.

At a press conference this morning, Dr Bawumia congratulated former President John Dramani Mahama and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) on their decisive victory, even as the Electoral Commissioner prepares to make the official declaration.

Acknowledging the democratic will of Ghanaians, Dr Bawumia pledged his support for a smooth transition. “I extend my heartfelt congratulations to President-elect John Dramani Mahama. The will of the people has prevailed, and I am committed to ensuring a seamless handing-over process,” he said.

Remaining optimistic about the future, he hinted at a possible political comeback: “This is not the end of the road for NPP. We may have lost the battle, but we haven’t lost the war. We will come back stronger.”

This announcement follows the NDC’s strong performance at the polls, where they secured a clear mandate from voters.

Dr Bawumia’s concession has been widely praised as a move to uphold Ghana’s peace and democratic integrity, reinforcing the nation’s reputation for smooth electoral transitions.
