Cold snap grips Cyprus: heavy snow and landslides in the south
Severe weather conditions caused by Storm Elena continue to batter Cyprus, bringing heavy snowfall and landslides that have disrupted road access across the island.
According to the Cyprus Meteorological Department, the mercury in Prodromos, a mountain village, ranged between 6°C and 1°C after 8:00 p.m. yesterday.
Among urban areas, Nicosia recorded the lowest temperature, dipping to 6°C during the night, making it the coldest major city on the island.
Meanwhile, a winter wonderland descended upon the Troodos Mountains as heavy snow continued to fall overnight.
Snow depth in Troodos Square had reached 2 centimetres. The Cyprus Police have issued a warning that roads leading to Troodos, including those from Platres, Karvouna, and Prodromos, are only accessible to vehicles equipped with snow chains or four-wheel drive due to ongoing snow accumulation.
Sporadic rain is still reported, particularly in the northeastern regions, including Karpasia.
