TRNC coalition government tenders resignation to president Akinci
Prime Minister of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus TRNC, Huseyin Ozgurgun has presented the resignation of the Democratic Party (DP) and the National Unity Party (UBP) coalition government to President Mustafa Akinci after last week's general election.
Following the resignation, Özgürgün told the president to take necessary steps to form a new
government.
Receiving the resignation letter on Friday, Akinci thanked Ozgurgun for the services he has
done so far and stated that he would like him to continue to serve as
Prime Minister until the establishment of the new government. The president also thanked the UBP-DP government for it's services during his tenure.
Akıncı stated that they have fulfilled a constitutional necessity and noted that the formation of the new government to be established will be determined after negotiations are held.
In the TRNC Parliament, consisting of 50 seats, 26 deputies must support the establishment of the government.
Those who were elected deputies on 7 January will be sworn in on Monday January 22 at the Assembly's first meeting following which President Mustafa Akıncı will give the task of forming a government to a party leader or deputy.
The UBP won 21 sears, Republican Turkish Party (CTP) 12 seats, People's Party (HP) 9 seats, Social Democratic Party (TDP) 3 seats, DP 3 and the Rebirth Party (YDP) 2 seats.
